Week 14
Baby's development this week:
- Neck is getting longer
- Chin is more prominent
- Starting to respond to outside sounds, pressure (he will move if you poke at him)
- Kidneys are producing urine
- Lanugo (peach fuzz) is starting to sprout

Your healthy diet this week:
- Prenatal vitamin daily- Drink water. Who has the record for number of trips to the bathroom in an hour?
- Eat well and moderately
So your morning sickness has worn off. Suddenly a larger world of food is opened up to you. Is your first reaction something like this?... "If it looks, smells, or even just sounds good, eat it! You are eating for two after all! Take advantage."
Though it's tempting to follow that first instinct, remember that you are not really eating for two. Your baby is only about the size of your fist and doesn't need as many calories as an adult. If you follow the "eat for two" rule, you'll probably end up very disappointed after you give birth, when you find that you just made yourself fat.
The Institute of Medicine recommends an additional 340 calories during the second trimester, and an additional 450 calories during the third trimester.
Here is some good advice from Thomas Straub:
Weeks 13 to 24 - Second Trimester
You will probably find your second trimester easier than your first one. You will be more comfortable with your body, and your baby will be growing. This is also the time that you may start experiencing food cravings.
You will certainly be hungry, but you will need to make sure that you eat food that is high in protein, vitamins and minerals. To arrange your meals in your second trimester try the following:
- Eat three or four meals a day
- Snack on foods that are nutritious
- If you have cravings, try to keep them to a minimum
- Prepare foods using fresh ingredients when possible
- Drink a lot of water
