Baby's Development This Week:

-  Taste buds are functional
-  Several ounces of amniotic fluid are swallowed every day (that's a lot more than before)
-  Meconium is forming in baby's intestines
What to add to your menu this week:

-  More water
-  Cranberries, cranberry juice

If you have never had the experience of a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) you might have the chance during your pregnancy. UTI's are very common during pregnancy. They are generally identified by a burning sensation and frequent need to urinate (with little urine as a result). If you suspect that you may have a UTI, see your doctor right away. Not only will you get relief sooner, but you will avoid your UTI becoming a kidney infection (which can greatly compromise your health and send you to the hospital). Your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic that is safe for pregnancy.

You can do a few things to keep from getting a UTI. First, drink lots of water. A hydrated body is continually pumping out toxins and waste (and those nasty bacteria that cause UTI's). If you are dehydrated, the bacteria will have a longer time to set up camp in your urinary tract. Also, it is wise to go to the bathroom when you feel the urge. Holding it for too long can also increase your risk of infection.

Cranberries are known to help prevent UTI's. They have special properties that coat the inside of the urinary tract, causing bacteria to slip off instead of hanging out. Keep in mind that cranberry juice only helps prevent infection, not treat it. If you have a UTI, you should see your doctor. Cranberry juice and cranberry supplements found at your local drugstore have the highest concentration of antibacterial properties.
